HISTORY SIGHTSEEING AND RECREATION

The locals can tell you there is never a lack of things to do in Northwestern North Dakota.

It’s hard to think of an outdoor sport not available. Guidance on fishing, hiking, bird watching, biking, boating and hunting is readily available from the Williston Convention and Visitors Bureau, the State of North Dakota, or from just about any local.

The area is rich with stories of Lewis and Clark, fur trappers, early settlers and wranglers. To prove it, national parks, museums and historic sites are positioned throughout the area.

When it comes to shopping, all the essentials are easily available through select national retailers and local grocers. What you won’t find is a shopping mall full of chain stores. Instead you’ll also discover boutique shopping at its best: “one of a kind” treasures at antique stores, a good read at the most comfortable book store in the upper Midwest, kitchen gadgets, exquisite jewelry, distinctive gifts, original art and striking home décor.

For the high rollers, Four Bears Casino and Lodge, 50 miles from the course, offers big name entertainment year round and “any kind of stakes” gambling you are ready for.

BIRDING

A growing interest in Northwestern North Dakota is bird watching.

Bird watching is one of the most popular forms of nature-related recreation. Bird watching can be as simple as enjoying birds that come to your backyard bird feeder. Or it can be as complex as learning bird songs by ear, or traveling across the country to add birds to a "life list." All you need is a good pair of eyes (though binoculars sure help!) and a field guide.

FISHING

Dine on walleye, fight a Northern, snag a prehistoric Paddlefish or travel upstream with salmon. Whether you’re looking for a trophy or good eating, you’ll catch it near The Links of North Dakota. Boat ramps and guide services are abundant.

For anglers, North Dakota has hundreds of places to fish for walleye, northern pike, bass, perch, trout, and bluegill. Lake Sakakawea is nationally recognized for its Chinook salmon and walleye fishing.

FORT UNION TRADING AND HISTORIC POST

John Jacob Astor's American Fur Company built Fort Union Trading Post in 1828 near the junction of the Missouri and Yellowstone rivers in what is now North Dakota.

FORT BUFORD HISTORIC SITE

Fort Buford, located near present-day Williston, was one of a number of military posts established to protect overland and river routes used by immigrants settling the West. While it served an essential role as the sentinel on the northern plains for twenty-nine years, it is probably best remembered as the place where the famous Hunkpapa Sioux leader, Sitting Bull, surrendered in 1881.

BUFFALO TRAILS MUSEUM

The Buffalo Trails Museum is located in Williams County in Northwestern North Dakota and is dedicated to preserving a record of the prairie land, of its early Indian inhabitants, and of the trials and triumphs of the plains pioneer.

Epping is located off state highway 42, [where 42 intersects county road #8], about twenty miles Northeast of Williston.
